Water is the constraining resource in most palm-growing regions. Efficiency work that begins with equipment purchases, rather than with measurement, tends to produce cost without confidence.
This article sets out the fundamentals: what is being measured, which practices influence it, and how governance turns improvement into something that can be audited.
Define the measurement first
Irrigation efficiency compares water beneficially used by the crop with water delivered to the field. Losses occur through deep percolation below the root zone, surface evaporation, distribution leakage and uneven application.
Without metering at a meaningful level — block, valve or estate — efficiency remains an estimate, and estimates cannot be improved reliably or reported credibly.
- Meter at the level where decisions are actually taken.

Scheduling based on demand, not habit
Crop water demand changes with development stage, temperature, humidity, wind and soil type. Fixed weekly schedules therefore over-irrigate in some periods and under-irrigate in others.
Reference evapotranspiration combined with soil-moisture sensing gives a defensible basis for scheduling. The value is not the sensor itself but the discipline of adjusting to observed conditions.
System design and maintenance
Localised systems such as drip and micro-sprinkler reduce evaporative and distribution losses compared with flood irrigation, but only when pressure is regulated, emitters are clean and uniformity is checked.
Maintenance is where designed efficiency is either preserved or quietly lost. Filtration, flushing schedules and emitter inspection belong in the operating routine.
Soil, mulching and salinity
Organic matter and mulching improve infiltration and reduce surface evaporation. In arid regions, leaching requirements to manage salinity must be planned deliberately, since salts accumulate when applied water is minimised without a leaching strategy.
Water quality, not only water quantity, therefore belongs in the governance record.
From efficiency to governance
